VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol and in short it is also called Voice Over IP, it allows you to send voice over the internet so you can chat to other people using the internet just like your home telephone land line. To use Voice over IP on your computer all you need a microphone and headphones or a 2 in 1 piece which you can just wear on your head and the microphone will sit nicely in front of your mouth so you don't have to continually hold the microphone to talk. Also you will need to install some VoIP software like Skype.
The quality of the chatting over the internet really depends on the service that your ISP provides most of the time the quality will be fine but can be a little less clear than your normal telephone land line sometimes. Sometimes the quality will be even better than your land line. The fact that chatting over the internet doesn't cost you anything extra, as you are just paying your normal ISP monthly bill, if there is a little quality loss it is well worth it, you no longer have to pay for every phone call like you would on your mobile or land line. Some Internet Service Providers even allow you to call to mobile phones and telephone land lines from your computer using VoI and as we all know calling to mobile phones from your land line can be very expensive.
VoIP has many advantages over traditional telecommunication networks they include:
- Free functions like three way calling, automatic redial, and call forwarding all of which normal phone service providers will charge for. - You only need a VoIP provider and an internet connection to setup this service which means whole call centres can lower their phone bill costs. - You can have more than one telephone call on the same line, so in other words you don't need to have an extra phone line installed if you want the ability to have 2 calls at the same time. - There is software that can be easily installed to protect the calls so your conversations can be highly secure. - VoIP phones can be merged with other functions from the Internet like audio and video conferencing. - The ability to send out wide band speech which can increase the quality of speech and music.
There are many ISP's (Internet Service Providers) around Australia that offer a Voice over IP service. It is great idea to learn about and take advantage of VoIP has it can lower your phone bills considerably. If you live in a household with many people who like to chat on the telephone then VoIP is a must as you can all chat at the same time for far cheaper than a normal telephone land line. When you are choosing your Internet connection plan make sure you are aware if VoIP comes packaged with it or not, and also check the capabilities of the service offered, thing like are you able to call mobile phones or not.
